Data Breach

Crypto Bytes
DIGESTIBLE CRYPTO NEWS

No one has ever hacked Bitcoin. It is the most secure computing network in the world.
– Anthony Pompliano, Morgan Creek Digital Assets co-founder

Hey All,

Just as Equifax settles a $700 million dollar fine for a data breach that affected 174 million user account, Capital One was hacked. Capital One announced that personal information including names and addresses of about 100 million individuals in the United States and 6 million people in Canada were obtained.

Data breaches are becoming all too common. The problem is companies store users’ data in a centralized server which makes it prone to systemic risk, everyones information being exposed with a single breach.

Blockchain technology solves this because information is stored in a decentralized network rather than under a single entity. If a user gets hacked it effects only a single user rather than the whole network.

Who’s up…

Buying Bitcoin to brace for Brexit.

What is Brexit… Brexit is an abbreviation for “British exit,” referring to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson, vowed to leave the European Union, “do or die,” by October 31st.

Losing pounds…The fear is that Britain is heading towards a no-deal Brexit, which would cast most of the UK into trade and travel turmoil. Member countries of the EU would likely suffer an economic setback in the fallout, leading to a lack of confidence in both the pound and euro.

Bitcoin search… Bitcoin searches surge as Britain prepares for Brexit. According to data compiled through Google Trends, ‘bitcoin’ search volume has risen to its highest level in a year in England and other parts of the UK.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  1. The pound slumped to its weakest level in more than two years Tuesday. That’s bad news for Britain.
  2. When your local currency depreciates in value the cost to import goods and services are more expensive. Britain imports more than it exports.
  3. British citizens will likely buy alternative currencies to hedge against the Pound losing value. Based on Google’s search results, we see there is an interest in Bitcoin as a hedge.

Number Of The Week: 85%
This week, 17,850,000 bitcoin have been mined meaning 85% are in circulation.

Even if we wanted, we couldn’t ban Bitcoin.

Roll Call…U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) admitted that it would be difficult or impossible to ban bitcoin in the United States. ‘I’m pretty confident we couldn’t succeed in doing that [ban bitcoin] because this is a global tech, a global innovation.”

Rep. Patrick McHenry was also open to the digital asset ecosystem and admitted bitcoin was an “unstoppable force.”

THE TAKEAWAYS

  1. Bitcoin > Libra. The decentralization feature to Bitcoin makes it immune to government intervention.
  2. If your going to send a subpoena to Bitcoin, where do you send it?
  3. Read below to find out how the US government is putting the brakes on Facebook’s Libra.

REKT
…Who’s down

Libra might not see the light of day.

Facebook warns investors… Facebook says in the risk factors section of its latest quarterly report that it can’t guarantee Libra “will be made available in a timely manner, or at all.”

“Libra has drawn significant scrutiny from governments and regulators in multiple jurisdictions and we expect that scrutiny to continue,” Facebook said in its filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  1. We can’t stifle innovation because lack of understanding. The failure to act and adopt blockchain and cryptocurrencies will put the US at a severe disadvantage to the countries that do accept the technology.
  2. Compare the success of the countries (and companies) that failed to adopt the internet and the one’s that embraced the technology and saw the opportunity.
  3. David Marcus, head of Libra project, understood that Libra would get push back which is why they shared their White paper well before they develop Libra.
  4. Marcus stated in the Senate hearing that Libra will not move forward without addressing all concerns.

Stocks plummeted because US & China failure to agree on a trade deal just started a currency war.

iPhones 10% more expensive… The US pledged a 10% tariff on the remaining $300B in Chinese goods. Since tariffs are like taxes, that would make the Chinese-produced iPhone X 10% more expensive to Americans.

US just labeled China a currency manipulator… China’s government weakened its currency so now your $1 buys 7 Chinese Yuan — the weakest level the currency has hit in over a decade.

Why tariffs & currency manipulation… Tariffs make it more expensive to manufacture in China which encouraging US companies (like Apple) to make stuff elsewhere.
By weakening the value of its currency compared to the US dollar, China offsets part of the tariff’s impact.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  1. Trade wars are not good for anyone. Tariff’s ‘tax’ will ultimately fall on US consumers to pay more.
  2. Investors are looking for a safe haven. Bitcoin’s price was up 20% this week and gold reached record highs.
  3. Government’s can be very unpredictable to adjust currency supply using method such as quantitative easing and interest rates. What is great about Bitcoin is that code is open source and you can know at any time the amount of circulating Bitcoin.

CORRECTION
What is Libra?
I just wanted to correct something from last weeks newsletter where we broke down Libra. I wrote Libra was pegged to the US dollar when in fact, it is pegged to a basket of different currencies.

Stable Coin… Libra is pegged to a basket of currencies that will anchor its value. Merchants will be more likely to accept a cryptocurrency who’s price does not fluctuate.

In case you missed last weeks newsletter you can read up on Libra here.

Economic Uncertainty Ahead

Crypto Bytes
DIGESTIBLE CRYPTO NEWS

At some point, the dollar has to give. You can’t just keep printing money, and monetizing debt, and buying bonds, without the dollar imploding..
– Peter Schiff, chief global strategist of Euro Pacific Capital Inc.

Hey All,

Lately, we are experiencing a lot of global uncertainties. Just to name a few, currency crises in Venezuela and Argentina, Britain leaving the European Union, and trade wars between United States.

As a result, investors are buying up gold as a safe haven for the looming uncertainties. Could we begin to see investors moving into digital gold?

Salary payments in cryptocurrencies.

Way to go! New Zealand… will legally allow companies to pay salaries in cryptocurrency starting September 1, becoming the first nation to do so, according to a Financial Times report.

Bitcoin…to replace the New Zealand dollar on workers’ paychecks.

The Caveat… The country’s tax agency ruled salaries and wages may be paid in cryptocurrencies so long as the preferred digital coin is pegged to at least one standard, or fiat, currency.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  1. It is good sign when countries are viewing cryptocurrencies as an asset rather than a speculative pump and dump.
  2. September 1st is only two weeks away. Will be an interesting to see how many people take their salary in Bitcoin and if other countries follow.

Number Of The Week: $10 million
Initial minimum investment to join Facebook’s cryptocurrency, Libra foundation.

Samsung’s crypto wallet adds support for Bitcoin.

Limited to few devices… Currently Samsung’s flagship devices, the Galaxy S10, S10+, S10 5G, and S10e, as well as the newly launched Note 10 and Note 10+, have the cryptocurrency wallet.

Available in 7 countries… Canada, Germany, South Korea, Switzerland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  1. Samsung is an early believer in the cryptocurrency movement more than most companies.
  2. Samsung continues to invest in the crypto space by integrating crypto wallets to their smart phone and buying blockchain patent.
  3. Currently, Samsung wallet supports Ethereum and Ethereum Tokens (ERC-20).

REKT
…Who’s down

Libra can not be a global coin.

Bound to US jurisdiction… Andreas Antonopolous, a long time Bitcoin evangelist and spokesperson, said that Facebook’s cryptocurrency Libra cannot behave as a global coin because its services are limited to a few countries.

Not borderless.. Facebook’s Libra compromises on borderless transactions as they have to comply with sanctions, embargoes and currency regulations.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  1. Bitcoin > Libra. The decentralization feature to Bitcoin makes it immune to government intervention.
  2. If your going to send a subpoena to Bitcoin, where do you send it?
  3. Facebook is not permitted in a number countries where the citizens could benefit from a cryptocurrency. Countries such as Russia already said they will not accept Libra.

Argentina, South America’s second largest economy is at risk to default on debt.

No confidence to paying back debt… The government and its subsidiaries currently have $15.9 billion in debt payments denominated in dollars and euros due in 2019, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Probability of default… 55% within a one-year period. Meanwhile, over a five-year period, the likelihood of default is seen at 82.5%.

Results… The currency has lost a quarter of its value so far this week, while Argentina’s main stock market has fallen nearly 35% in three days.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  1. Currency depreciation has an impact on the local citizens and currency holders. Buying imported goods and traveling becomes more expensive.
  2. The age where people have all their wealth in a single currency is over. Investors know the importance of diversification so lets apply that logic to consumers.

Facebook Launching Coin in 2020… Facebook’s calling its cryptocurrency “GlobalCoin” and plans to launch in 12 countries by next March. Pay Phone Bill With Bitcoin… AT&T now accepts Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies via Bitpay. Bitpay is a cryptocurrency payment processing company. The company currently has thousands of mainstream companies that it offers its services to from Microsoft to Shopify and Virgin. As AT&T now accepts Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, do you think we will be seeing other major companies follow suit?

Welcome New York… Robinhood Opens Trading for 7 Cryptocurrencies in New York. New York is unique and problematic for crypto traders because all purveyors must apply for a BitLicense, most notably for companies that are “storing, holding, or maintaining custody or control of virtual currency on behalf of others,” according to NYDFS.

TAKEAWAYS

  1. The use cases for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are expanding as new payment channels and merchants are recognizing them as legit currencies.
  2. AT&T and Facebook are more examples of a major corporations starting to see the benefits of crypto by being able to eliminate processing fees.
  3. New York remains one of the States that is least open to the idea of accepting the legitimacy of cryptocurrencies. Could this be because it is a traditional banking head quarters?

ProCurrency is trading around 0.001 cents down -22.94% as of press time.

Not The One… The Australian Securities and Investments Commission has warned the public that crypto  project OneCoin “could be involved in a scam,” according to a notice released on May 28. The Australian financial regulator has issued an official warning against OneCoin, urging the public to not deal with this company as it is not licensed in Australia.

TAKEAWAYS

  1. It is highly recommend to do your due diligence before investing in crypto projects. There are over 2500 coins and it is safe to say that their are bad actors in the space.
  2. Most will not yield the expected returns that investors are hoping for based on not being able to achieve what they sought out to build.

60 Minutes Discusses Bitcoin

Crypto Bytes
DIGESTIBLE CRYPTO NEWS + PODCAST

So– okay. (CHUCKLE) Sorry, let me just get this straight. You spent about $800 million on pizza?

Anderson Cooper, Bitcoin’s Wild Ride

One of the exciting things that happened this week was CBS 60 Minutes aired a 13 minute segment on Bitcoin. It has received some criticism as being one sided but still worth a watch. 60 Minutes averages 11 million viewers so this is a good step for mass market adoption.

Who’s up…

Popularity Contest… Bitcoin is back among Google’s most-popular keywords for the first time in over twelve months. Google Trends tracks search interest for certain terms. Interestingly, the countries that are leading the Google searches are not cryptocurrency powerhouses: South Africa, The Netherlands, Slovenia, Austria, Nigeria.

60 Minutes Aired Bitcoin… Bitcoin was on display for CBS popular show, 60 Minutes. Anderson Cooper reports on how bitcoin was started, where it may go and some of the people who have ridden the cryptocurrency roller coaster over the last 10 years.  Watch.

Takeaways: The 60 Minutes segment on Bitcoin is worth a watch although I think John Oliver on Last Week Tonight was better done. The segment spent a great deal of time interviewing an early adopter of Bitcoin that spent 10,000 Bitcoin on pizza. The last time the Google search result for Bitcoin reached this level was in October 2017, months before it reached all time highs.

REKT
…Who’s down

Mr. Not-so Wonderful…Mr. Wonderful’ Kevin O’Leary, most famously known for his role on Shark Tank, says Bitcoin is essentially a “digital game” and is “worthless.” “People should understand today the hot digital is bitcoin,” O’Leary added. “Tomorrow it could be whatever.”

Schiff’s 60 Minutes Dis… Peter Schiff was not of fan of the 60 Minutes coverage of Bitcoin. Tweeting hours later, “60 Minutes just aired a free commercial for Bitcoin. Great press for Bitcoin owners looking to sell to CBS viewers who may be suckered into buying based on this very one-sided segment. At a minimum CBS owed its audience a healthy degree of skepticism. Very bad reporting as usual!” View Tweet.

Takeaways: I share the name Kevin but not his opinion on Bitcoin as being worthless. Kevin’s investment strategy is similar to Warren Buffett who is also not buying into Bitcoin. Kevin also has a 400 million dollar interest in preserving USD as the global currency. Schiff’s stance on Bitcoin comes at no surprise. He has expressed doubts in the past. The 60 Minutes segment was a bit one sided but wasn’t misleading and there is only some much you can cover in 13 minutes.

30 days and 30 nights… Back in 2017 when the price of Bitcoin (BTC) crossed $7,600 it only took 30 days to reach its all time highs of $20,000. Bitcoin just crossed $7,800. What will the price be 30 days from now?

Who’s up…

Finally Facebook… Facebook rolls back ban on cryptocurrency ads as it ramps up its own blockchain efforts. Facebook will no longer require pre-approval for ads related to blockchain technology, industry news, education or events related to cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin To $250k… Serial VC investor Tim Draper told FOX Business  in an interview on May 10, Bitcoin (BTC) will have a 5% market share of the entire world by 2023, a single coin would be worth $250,000. “I eventually want to have a fund where I take in bitcoin and I fund everybody in bitcoin and they pay their employees and suppliers in bitcoin and then I pay my investors in bitcoin,” he continued. Draper then stated: “Because I would then require no accounting, no legal, no bookkeeping, no custody — it would all be done.”

Open For Business… As of today, cryptocurrency is now accepted as payments at tens of thousands of merchants in the U.S. on the Flexa network. Top brands such as Whole Foods, Baskin Robbins, Lowe’s, and Nordstrom will now accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and Gemini Dollar.

Takeaways: Corporations can no longer ignore cryptocurrencies. They need to adapt or be left in the dust. Facebook has been a hypocrite in their support for crypto since they plan to create their own coin yet ban crypto advertising. Was it their plan to just suppress the competition? Tim Draper is just another person with their price prediction of Bitcoin.

Binance… Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges was hacked with a grand total of $41 million (7,000 BTC) being stolen. The security breach is the sixth largest exchange hack in crypto history. An analyst speculates that the hack had something to do with Binance’s lack of Segwit implementation.

Ban on Bitcoin… Congressman Brad Sherman, an outspoken critic of Bitcoin, is calling for a bill to ban all cryptocurrencies. The House Democrat from California says he’s looking to introduce legislation that will make it illegal for Americans to buy and sell crypto assets, an effort he believes will protect the country’s standing as a political and economic powerhouse.

Fool’s Gold… Peter Schiff, the stockbroker and financial commentator is well-known for his early warning market calls, particularly prior to the US mortgage crisis states “I don’t think bitcoin has anything in common with gold. I mean it tries to pretend to be gold, but I think it’s fool’s gold.” He doubles down by saying “bitcoin has no intrinsic value other than the fact that people are willing to buy it because they think they can sell it to somebody else at a higher price. That’s not money, that’s a Ponzi scheme.”

Takeaways: I have followed Peter Schiff for sometime now. He is a longtime gold supporter and investor. So it is in his best interest to bash any rival to gold. Click here to watch a great debate between Peter and the CEO of ShapeShift, Erik Voorhees. Binance hack came to a surprise being that it is one of the largest and respected exchanges in the world. Goes to show that you are better off storing crypto off exchanges. This weeks podcast explains proper ways to store crypto. Countries that ban bitcoin will open the opportunity to countries that support it.

Takeaways: Institutional money getting into the crypto space is very interesting and IMO will be a catalyst for the market to reach new highs as new money pours in by the millions. Buffett Bashing Bitcoin…Again… Warren Buffett’s newest bitcoin comments seem even harsher. In an interview before Berkshire’s annual meeting, Buffett called bitcoin “a gambling device” and also pointed out that there’s been lots of fraudulent activity in the bitcoin world. “It doesn’t do anything. It just sits there. It’s like a seashell or something, and that is not an investment to me,” Buffett said.

Un-Tether… After a week of drama surrounding iFinex Inc., which operates Bitfinex and owns Tether Ltd., CoinMarketCap has decided to remove Bitfinex’s price data from its calculations.. Tether and Bitfinex confirm USDT is not fully backed by fiat, only 74% of tethers backed with cash. According to court documents from Bitfinex’s legal representation, the company needed the $900 line-of-credit to cover the loss of access to $850 million from payment processor Crypto Capital.

Takeaways: I am Buffett fan as much as the next person but if you understand Buffett investing philosophy his judgement towards Tech Stars hasn’t been spot on from missing out on Microsoft and just recently investing in Amazon and Apple. Tether has been in the spotlight before regarding shady activity and this is just another sign that has me stay far away from Tether (USDT).

2041 Recovery… According to an analyst at UBS – a Switzerland based International bank – Bitcoin may take up to 22 years to regain its previous dizzying highs based on the historical performance of similar asset bubbles…

Sorry Son… Softbank’s founder & billionaire, Masayoshi Son, lost a reported $130 million from buying bitcoin at the $20k peak and sold in early 2018. Don’t feel too bad, his net worth is still $24 billion.

Takeaways: To quote the legendary Warren Buffett, “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.” In other words buy low and sell high – and don’t follow the herd. Buffett advice could have saved Son millions if he didn’t get caught up in the crypto craze.

Bitcoin passes $5,500… Bitcoin has secured one of its most key targets. In the last couple of hours, Bitcoin has crossed over above $5,500, breaking its most recent resistance positions of $5,400. With this achieved, the coin is currently aiming at a position above $6,000 and the new wave of green suggests that this will be done in the short-term.

The sentiment towards Bitcoin seems to be changing as the price of reaches a 5 month high and is one of the best performing assets in 2019.

Russia’s failed attempt to regulate… The proposed ‘digital assets’ law aims to “legalize ICOs” in Russia and is expected to be reviewed in May. If this law passes, then Russia’s central bank will have the sole power to decide which digital assets can be bought by unaccredited investors. To become accredited, an individual must be in possession of assets valued at over 10 million rubles ($150,000 USD).

Mexico Wont Pay For It… The US White House is reportedly planning to target remittance payments to fund the US/Mexico border wall in the form of a remittance tax. If passed, those changes may push immigrants to use alternative channels to transfer needed funds, such as Bitcoin. According to one report, 2018 saw a total of around $33 billion sent in remittances from the US to Mexico. Moreover, this is one of the largest sources of foreign capital in Mexico. Remittances from the US to Mexico are already fined at around 5%.

Takeaways: Laws that are anti-crypto will force crypto startups to move to friendlier jurisdictions such as Malta or Switzerland. Mexico and other countries that are exposed to the remittance ripoff will find alternative to sending money back home such as the use of cryptocurrency or mailing cash.

Bitcoin is the Facebook of money.. used by millions today, but over the next ten years, it’s real challenge will be to adapt and improve as it reaches billions of users.”
Ami Ben-David, 2019

MOON
Who’s up…

Bitcoin’s Big Milestone… Now, bitcoin has crossed a significant adoption and usage milestone with its 400 millionth transaction since bitcoin was created in early 2009, as recorded by bitcoin’s public blockchain. Bitcoin is now averaging 350,000 transactions per day at around 15,000 transactions every hour, which is about four a second. Source

Top YouTuber Joins Blockchain…  PewDiePie, the world’s most popular YouTuber by subscriber numbers (93.7 million), has joined blockchain-based live streaming platform DLive, the YouTube on the blockchain. DLive rewards both content creators and viewers using its native token, “Lino points.” While some platforms take up to 50 percent of creators’ income, decreasing the “viability and livelihood” of the community, DLive takes no percentage of earnings and does not charge any fees to content creators, the platform said.

Takeaways: Bitcoin is gaining traction and user adoption which is a more significant measure than Bitcoin’s price. Blockchain offers a alternative platform for content creators that keeps more money in their pockets.

…Who’s down

Galaxy Hacked… Widely touted as a game-changer for the crypto community because of its groundbreaking integration of a cryptocurrency wallet, the Samsung Galaxy S10 is apparently a lot less secure than intended. In February, Samsung announced that its latest S10 model would integrate a secure blockchain wallet to store private keys for crypto assets. But a new video posted on Imgur shows how a hacker named ‘darkshark’, a security researcher, appears to bypass the mobile device’s biometric security system to unlock the phone.

Bitcoin SV Delisted… Craig Wright, who claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto, had his attorneys serve legal papers to an anonymous Twitter user who publicly denied he created Bitcoin. In response, the crypto community rallied against Wright. The CEO of Binance threat to delist Wright’s Bitcoin SV (BSV) wasn’t empty as BSV will be delisted on Binance on April 22 and no longer able to trade.

Takeaways: Hack on the S10 is a Samsung design flaw of the phone rather than a problem with the crypto wallet. If you have Bitcoin SV on Binance you need to sell it or move it by April 22. In any case, it is advised to keep your crypto off exchanges and store on a hardware wallet such as a Ledger Nano.

Book Airbnb using Bitcoin… Cryptocurrency gift card provider Bitrefill has added a service allowing users to book Airbnb rentals with five cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Dogecoin (DOGE) and Dash (DASH). Airbnb gift cards can only be applied for reservations less than 28 nights, the firm said, while customers can purchase the cards in U.S. dollar denominations of $25, $50, and $100.

Bitcoin is back… Bitcoin price rallies to its highest level since November. Reasoning for the jump in price is not immediately clear but that doesn’t stop analysts from speculating. Some of their guesses include: unknown whale (trader with a lot of money) made a purchase, April fool’s joke that SEC was launching Bitcoin ETF, Elon Musk tweeting “Dogecoin Rulez” and algorithms triggering a buy.
